What is IT Virtualisation?

IT virtualisation in cloud computing allows us to virtualise your servers, storage, or other physical hardware or data centre resources, allowing them to provide numerous services such as infrastructure, software, and platforms.

It uses software to create an abstraction layer over computer hardware that allows the hardware elements of a single computer—processors, memory, storage and more—to be divided into multiple virtual computers, commonly called virtual machines (VMs). Each virtual machine runs its operating system (OS) and behaves like an independent computer, even though it runs on just a portion of the underlying computer hardware.

Historically, businesses have run most of their user software on desktops/laptops with the software installed locally. Virtualisation moves this responsibility from the end user desk to one central point. It allows for a lighter footprint but also ensures that software is deployed correctly and updated centrally on the most up-to-date equipment, always.
